Research Project on Silkworms as Wearable Energy Storage
Oct 2019 – Dec 2019
Project description
This is a research project mainly on the research paper "Silkworms as a factory of functional wearable energy storage fabrics" by Authors: Basant A. Ali and Nageh K. Allam.
Authors were interested in silk because…
● The silkworms could be used as a factory to produce semiconducting/metallic
natural silk used in technological applications such as supercapacitor
electrodes
● The modification of the natural silk for use in flexible supercapacitor
applications
● Different electrical behavior due to the chemically modified silkworm diets
seeing that using different materials affects the structure and properties of the
resulting silks
● They are interested in enhancing the silk’s capacitance, by increasing the amount of materials in the silkworm’s diet (specifically graphite, TiO2 nanotubes, MoS2, and KMnO4/MnCl2)
