Matthew Rosenthal, a native of Westport, Connecticut, is a versatile double bassist and electric bass player, comfortable in Contemporary and traditional Classical, Jazz, Rock, funk and musical theater. Matthew has performed with Eric and Colin Jacobsen, and Iranian clarinetist and composer Kinan Azmeh. He currently plays with the Bermuda Festival Orchestra in Hamilton, Bermuda, One World Symphony in Brooklyn, folk band The Relatives, the Noam Faingold Rock Orchestra and freelances in New York City and surrounding areas. He has premiered numerous pieces by young up-and-coming contemporary composers, including Elbert Liu’s demanding trio for piano, double bass and percussion “The Henge,” at the 2009 Bowdoin International Music Festival.

He began his musical studies on the double bass at the age of 8 studying with James Andrews, and currently studies with Joseph Bongiorno (NYC Opera, American Composer’s Orchestra, Mostly Mozart). Other teachers include renowned bassist and composer Joseph Russo (Hartford Symphony, Orchestra New England), Kurt Muroki (Chamber Music at Lincoln Center) and Linda McKnight (Colonial Symphony of New Jersey). He attended Manhattan School of Music precollege, the Bowdoin International Music Festival and the Eastman Summer Music Horizons festival. He has been principal bassist of the NYU Symphony, Norwalk Youth Symphony’s highest-level orchestra, has travelled to Peru to play with Combo Nuvo featuring Lenny Picket at the International Jazz Festival in Lima and has performed with the Bowdoin Festival Orchestra. Matthew is pursuing a double major at NYU studying Music Performance and Astrophysics.
